Astigmatism is an eye condition caused by an irregularly shaped cornea, resulting in blurred vision. In a normal eye, the cornea is naturally rounded. For those with astigmatism, the cornea is shaped more like a football, preventing light rays from focusing clearly. Until recently, candidates for lens implants could only hope for correcting nearsightedness and farsightedness. To correct astigmatism, patients could have corneal refractive surgery – LASIK, PRK, Limbal Relaxing Incisions (LRIs) – or depend on glasses or contacts after cataract surgery.
Thanks to exciting new lens technology, patients can benefit from astigmatism correcting lens implants called Toric IOLs. The Toric IOL is uniquely designed to counterbalance the irregularity that causes astigmatism, refocusing light rays as they pass through the lens. At Eye Associates, our world-class physicians will determine the best astigmatism management option for each patient to achieve the greatest freedom from glasses and contacts after cataract surgery.
